O - ring seal as flexible perfection

To determine which O - ring can be used , only a few important operating parameters must be defined . The temperature , the pressure and the indication of the chemical resistance determines the selection of the correct O - ring at the right application.

O - rings from Billi - seals are distinguished , depending on the material , by high thermal stability, good chemical resistance and good low temperature flexibility.

Freequently asked questions about O-Ring-Seals

What is an O-ring seal?

O-ring seals - also called bidirectional seals - are circular in shape and cross-section. They are usually made of rubber, silicone or complicated elastomers, but can also be made of other materials such as PTFE or metal.

How does an O-ring seal work?

Due to its cross-section, an O-ring seal can seal axially, but also radially. The O-ring is usually used in a groove. Due to the elasticity and the material`s springback, the O-ring seals from the superposition of the precompression. Therefore, it`s possible to seal very high pressures, as the precompression in the sealing joint always results in a higher pressure than the pressure to be sealed.

Where are O-rings installed?

O-ring seals are installed almost everywhere and are primarily used to seal a groove. They are used to prevent fluid leaks at joints.

What kind of materials are O-ring seals made of?

O-ring seals are mainly made of elastomers. The following parameters are responsible for a certain use of elastomers in the manufacturing process:

What pressures or vapours must the seal withstand? PTFE can also be used as a material for chemical contact.

There is a table for the selection of suitable materials - the so-called resistance list.

How do I find the right O-ring seal?

Contact us in order to find the right O-ring for your seal. Do not worry, if you do not have your technical data at hand. Just send us your seal and we will determine the correct dimensions.

How heat-resistant are O-rings?

That depends on the application. We supply heat-resistant, acid-resistant or base-resistant O-ring seals. FFKM, for example, can be installed at a heat of up to 330 degrees. Basically, the more heat-resistant an O-ring seal is, the more expensive the material and the manufacture will be. Our specialists will be happy to advise you on which material is best for your application.

How does an O-ring perform under pressure?

The elastic material of the O-ring seal deforms under pressure. The O-ring seals by spreading out the elastomers. Therefore, it is important to calculate the groove before inserting the seal. This ensures the seal to remain within a certain tolerance when deformed and seals perfectly.
